The Capability Gap: India Has the Client. India Has the Craft. The Missing Layer Sits Between Them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

India is no longer waiting for a luxury consumer to arrive. He has arrived. The question is whether anyone is built to serve him.<\/p>\n

The client has matured<\/strong>
\nFor years the Indian luxury story was a story about aspiration \u2014 people reaching for a category they did not yet fully understand. That has changed. BCG now describes the Indian market as moving beyond aspiration to appreciation: buyers who evaluate craftsmanship, provenance and lasting value rather than logos. This is a more demanding client than India has ever produced. He does not want access to luxury. He wants the real thing, and he can tell the difference.<\/p>\n

The craft was never the problem<\/strong>
\nIndia’s craft has never been in question. We have some of the most sophisticated ateliers, karigars and material traditions on earth \u2014 capabilities that European houses have quietly sourced from for decades. The raw material of luxury is abundant here. Craft is not the gap.<\/p>\n

The gap is the layer in between<\/strong>
\nIn The Capability Gap \u2014 the first LC Intelligence white paper, published in May 2026 \u2014 I argued that India has world-class craft and an increasingly world-class consumer, but lacks the orchestration layer that connects them. The layer that turns a maker into a house. That converts an object into a mythology. That governs distribution, narrative and symbolic distance with discipline. India has luxury creators. It does not yet have enough luxury orchestrators.<\/p>\n

Why orchestrators, not more creators<\/strong>
\nA creator builds a product. An orchestrator builds an ecosystem \u2014 aligning craft, story, distribution and brand governance so the whole becomes worth more than the sum. Most Indian founders are trying to solve an orchestration problem with a product mindset, and wondering why the brand refuses to compound. India does not have a talent problem. It has a strategic architecture problem.<\/p>\n

Where this gets built<\/strong>
\nThis is the work two institutions exist to do. Luxury Connect Business School trains the orchestrators \u2014 the professionals who will run the houses this market now demands. Luxury Brand Builders develops the same discipline inside founders who are building luxury and premiumisation brands themselves. Both start from the same premise: you cannot compress what you have not yet built, and the sequence is architectural, not optional.<\/p>\n

The client is ready. The craft is ready. Whether India builds houses that endure \u2014 or brands that simply charge more \u2014 will be decided by whether we finally build the layer in between.<\/p>\n
