India’s crafts are coveted enough that the world’s biggest houses keep reaching for them. What’s missing has never been the craft. It’s the system that would let India own what it so obviously created.<\/em><\/p>\n

The pattern that keeps repeating <\/strong><\/p>\n

This year, the same story played out more than once. Ralph Lauren sold a Bandhani-print wrap skirt for \u20b944,800 with no meaningful credit to India, then showed Indian jhumkas on a Paris runway with no mention of their origin. Givenchy draped a skirt that was a sari in all but name.<\/p>\n

And these were only the latest. In the recent past the list had already been growing \u2014 Prada’s Kolhapuri-style sandal at a Milan show, described merely as \u201cleather footwear\u201d; Dior’s coat embroidered in Lucknowi Mukaish and priced near two crore. Different houses, different crafts, the same omission each time.<\/p>\n

Each instance brought the same wave of outrage. Each time, aimed at the wrong lesson. The reflex is to call it theft, demand an apology, and move on until the next house does the same thing. That reflex has now repeated across seasons and brands so many times that the repetition itself is the real story. When the same mistake happens this predictably, across this many houses, over this many years, the problem is no longer the people making it. The problem is the gap that keeps letting it happen.<\/p>\n

The detail almost everyone missed <\/strong><\/p>\n

Here is the fact that changes the whole conversation. Bandhani is not unprotected. It carries a Geographical Indication tag \u2014 the same category of legal protection that shields Champagne, Darjeeling and Parmigiano- Reggiano. On paper, Bandhani was defended.<\/p>\n

It was lifted anyway. Printed onto a wrap skirt, sold at a Western price, while the artisans who hand-tie every knot of a genuine Bandhani saw nothing of it. So the comfortable conclusion \u2014 India simply needs to register its crafts \u2014 collapses on contact with the facts. Bandhani was registered. The tag existed. And the tag did nothing. That is the lesson India keeps missing: the problem was never the absence of a certificate. The problem is that a certificate is not a system.<\/p>\n

A tag is a claim. A system is a defence.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Geographical Indication is a piece of paper that says a name belongs to a place. That is all it is. It is a claim, not a defence.<\/p>\n

Champagne is not protected because it holds a certificate. Champagne is protected because France built an entire apparatus around that certificate \u2014 enforcement bodies, licensing regimes, legal teams that litigate in every jurisdiction on earth, trade institutions whose entire purpose is to make the name uncopyable, and a century of brand-building that turned three syllables into one of the most valuable words in commerce. The certificate is the smallest part of that machine. The machine is the system.<\/p>\n

India has been diligent about the certificates and absent on the systems. It has registered hundreds of crafts and built the defending apparatus around almost none of them. A GI tag with no enforcement, no commercial architecture and no brand strategy behind it is a lock with no door \u2014 a formal claim to something you have not built the means to hold.<\/p>\n

Shine is what India has. System is what it lacks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the gap that runs through the whole of Indian luxury. The craft has never been the question. Bandhani, Kolhapuri, Mukaish, Banarasi, Jamdani, Pashmina \u2014 these shine on their own, coveted enough that the world’s most powerful houses keep reaching for them season after season. The shine is real, and it is India’s.<\/p>\n

What is missing is everything that converts a coveted craft into a defensible, ownable, enduring asset: the enforcement muscle, the brand architecture, the governance, the commercial machine, the institutions whose job is to make sure the value flows back to the people and the country that created it. A craft that only shines gets admired, copied, and sold by someone else. A craft wrapped in a system gets owned. Shine attracts the world’s attention. Only a system converts that attention into something India keeps.<\/p>\n

Why this is the same problem in every Indian luxury brand<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is not only a story about heritage crafts and foreign houses. It is the exact pattern I see inside emerging Indian luxury brands, at a different scale. The Indian founder is almost always excellent at the product \u2014 the object is beautiful, the craft is genuine, the shine is there from the first collection. What comes far less naturally is the system around it: the brand architecture that makes the identity defensible, the governance that lets the house outlive its founder, the provenance and protection that stop the idea from being copied the moment it succeeds.<\/p>\n

Founders pour themselves into the shine and assume the system will follow. It does not follow on its own. It has to be built, deliberately, as its own discipline. That is why so many promising Indian brands stall at exactly the same point \u2014 not because the product weakened, but because a beautiful product with no system around it is, in the end, just a better version of the Kolhapuri: admired, reachable, and waiting to be taken.<\/p>\n

The buildable gap<\/strong><\/p>\n

The encouraging part is that none of this is structural or permanent. India is beginning to build \u2014 the push to extend GI-style protection, the growing conversation about provenance and ownership, the founders who are starting to think in systems rather than only in product. The gap is real, but it is buildable, and that is the whole point.<\/p>\n

A GI tag is the first brick, not the finished house. The work that matters is everything that comes after the certificate: the architecture, the enforcement, the brand, the institutions. That work is slower and less glamorous than designing a beautiful object, which is exactly why it gets skipped \u2014 and exactly why the houses that do it win. Every Indian craft, and every Indian luxury brand, faces the same choice Bandhani faces. Keep shining, and hope no one reaches for you. Or build the system that makes reaching for you pointless \u2014 because the name, the value and the meaning are already, unmistakably, and defensibly yours.<\/p>\n

Products win attention. Only systems win the future.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
