It has lacked the language to claim it. This is the story of how the world&#8217;s oldest tradition of craft came to import its definition of luxury from Paris \u2014 and why that is about to change.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember506\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>The question that stops you cold<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember507\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here is a question that unsettles every serious student of Indian luxury. How does a country with the world&#8217;s longest continuous tradition of exquisite craft \u2014 the muslin of Dhaka so fine it was called <em>woven air<\/em>, the Bidriware that made Persian courts gasp, the Kannauj attars that perfumed the Mughal emperors \u2014 end up importing its definition of luxury from Paris?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember508\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The answer is not flattering. And it is not India&#8217;s craft that failed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember509\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>A civilisation that mastered luxury before the word existed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember510\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Western luxury model rests on a single premise: that scarcity, combined with mastery and storytelling, creates desire. India mastered all three centuries before the term <em>luxury brand<\/em> was coined. Its weavers, goldsmiths, perfumers and stone-cutters supplied the finest objects to royal courts across four continents.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember511\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The difference was never skill. It was institution. Europe codified its mastery into structures \u2014 the Maison, with its heritage, its house name, its creative authority carried across generations. India left its mastery in the hands of the communities that held it, and then, over two centuries, systematically undervalued them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember512\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>How the amnesia set in<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember513\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Colonial trade policy dismantled India&#8217;s artisanal economy with precision. The handloom was undercut by the mill. The master craftsman was demoted to village artisan. The court patron who had sustained centuries of excellence was replaced \u2014 first by colonial administrators indifferent to Indian craft, then by a post-Independence middle class taught to read <em>Western<\/em> as aspirational and <em>Indian<\/em> as merely traditional. A polite word for old-fashioned.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember514\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That is the amnesia. Not a loss of skill \u2014 a loss of the <em>language<\/em> to value the skill. India didn&#8217;t forget how to make luxury. It forgot that it had invented it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember515\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>The paradox, in one comparison<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember516\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Consider two artisans. A Kanchipuram silk weaver in Tamil Nadu produces fabric of extraordinary technical complexity. A European house takes fabric of comparable difficulty and turns it into an object positioned as luxury worth tens of thousands. The Indian silk is positioned as a wedding purchase worth a few hundred.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember517\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The craft distinction between them is negligible. The branding distinction is total.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember518\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And the numbers make it brutal. Switzerland has roughly 60,000 watchmakers; its watch exports run to CHF 26.7 billion a year. India has over seven million skilled artisans; its handicraft exports total around USD 3.6 billion. Switzerland earns nearly half a million francs in export value per craftsperson. India earns a few hundred dollars per artisan. That gap is not a gap in craft. It is a gap in architecture.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember519\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>The world does not undervalue Indian craft. India does<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember520\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This is the uncomfortable centre of it. The world has never stopped wanting what India makes \u2014 European houses quietly source from Indian ateliers to this day. The undervaluation is not imposed from outside. It is internal: a civilisation that learned to see its own mastery as heritage rather than as luxury, as craft to be preserved rather than as an asset to be owned and commanded.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember521\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Seven million artisans. Three thousand living craft traditions. The largest artisan workforce on earth, and the fastest-growing luxury consumer market on earth \u2014 in the same country, at the same moment. The raw material for one of the great luxury industries of the century is already here, already skilled, already working.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember522\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>What the amnesia leaves behind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember523\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here is the part that should occupy every Indian luxury leader. India&#8217;s luxury market is projected to grow to three and a half times its current size by the end of this decade. But growth is not the same as ownership. The real risk is that this market booms \u2014 and the value flows almost entirely to European houses selling <em>to<\/em> Indians, while Indian brands remain in the second tier of their own civilisation&#8217;s tradition.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember524\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That would be the worst outcome imaginable: a wealthy India that still imports its definition of luxury. One of the world&#8217;s largest luxury markets, and the world&#8217;s most undervalued luxury producer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember525\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The amnesia is ending. The confidence is returning. What India needs now is not more craft \u2014 it has always had that. It needs the <em>institution<\/em> to carry the craft: a structure of its own, not borrowed from Paris, that places the master at its centre and presents India&#8217;s mastery to a world actively searching for exactly this.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember526\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">What that institution is \u2014 what it should be called, how it is built, and why it is something older and more powerful than the Maison \u2014 is the argument I will make next.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember527\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><em>The civilisation that invented luxury is about to remember.
