India makes the world’s luxury – when will it own it ?<\/h3>\n

A Fendi Baguette embroidered by India’s finest atelier is the most instructive object in luxury this season \u2014 not because anything went wrong, but because everything went right, and the gap is still there.<\/em><\/p>\n

The most beautiful bag in luxury this month was made in Mumbai<\/h3>\n

It is a Fendi Baguette.<\/p>\n

\n

Thirty-nine thousand five hundred beads<\/em>. Four hundred and seventy-five mirrors. One hundred and thirty-eight hours of hand embroidery<\/em>, so extraordinary that the internet, unprompted, gave the bag its own nickname.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It is a genuine object of wonder, and every hour of that wonder was worked by the master artisans of Chanakya, the Mumbai atelier that has embroidered for Fendi since 1997.<\/p>\n

I want to be precise about Fendi here, because precision is the whole point. Fendi has done this well<\/em>. It names Chanakya, openly and often. It is running live demonstrations of the artisans’ work at Harrods this month, in the windows of one of the most prestigious retailers on earth. It has publicly honoured a forty-year creative partnership. The artisans are reported to be fairly paid. This is not a story of theft, and anyone framing it as one hasn’t read the facts.<\/p>\n

It is something more interesting than theft. It is the clearest illustration I have seen, in a single object, of the structural position India occupies in global luxury \u2014 and why that position, however honourably occupied, is not the one India should settle for.<\/p>\n

Everything went right. The gap is still there.<\/h3>\n

Here is the uncomfortable fact underneath the beautiful bag. After forty years as arguably the most celebrated craft partner in the entire luxury industry, Chanakya’s work still leaves the atelier as a Fendi<\/em>. The bag sells under a Roman name. It commands a Roman price \u2014 roughly ten thousand dollars. It is stamped “Made in Italy,” which is technically true of its final assembly and untrue of its soul. And it enters the world as Italian heritage, carrying Italian meaning, generating Italian margin.<\/p>\n

The hands are Indian. The house is not.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is not a complaint about Fendi, which is playing its role beautifully. It is a description of the system<\/em> \u2014 a system in which India can supply the single most valuable input in luxury, the irreplaceable human craft, and still capture almost none of the value that craft creates once a European name is attached to it. Fendi is not the villain of this story. Fendi is the proof<\/em> of it \u2014 because if even the best, fairest, most generous version of this arrangement still leaves India as the anonymous maker, then the problem was never the goodwill of any individual house. The problem is the position itself.<\/p>\n

Why the maker earns a fraction of what the maker makes<\/h3>\n

Consider the economics honestly. A house like Fendi captures the value of that Baguette not because of the 138 hours \u2014 those hours are the cheapest part of the equation \u2014 but because of everything Fendi owns that Chanakya does not: the name, the archive, the narrative, the retail presence, the brand meaning accumulated over decades. The craft is the input. The ownership of meaning<\/em> is where the money is. And India, for all its unmatched craft, has systematically owned the input and rented out the meaning.<\/p>\n

This is the exact mechanism I have been describing for months. Luxury value does not live in the object. It lives in the meaning a house owns around the object \u2014 and meaning, unlike craft, is something India has been content to let others own. Chanakya makes the meaning possible<\/em>. Fendi owns it. That ownership is the entire difference between a ten-thousand-dollar bag and the wage for 138 hours of embroidery.<\/p>\n

The Shilp-Griha is the answer to exactly this<\/h3>\n

Two weeks ago I proposed the Shilp-Griha \u2014 the House of Craft \u2014 as India’s own institutional answer to the European Maison. The Fendi Baguette is why it matters, made tangible.<\/p>\n

The Shilp-Griha is not a plea for better credit. Fendi already gives good credit. It is a plea for ownership<\/em> \u2014 for India to build houses that put the Indian name on the finished object, that own the meaning and therefore capture the margin, that turn the world’s finest hands into the world’s finest houses<\/em>. Chanakya embroidering for Fendi is a triumph of Indian craft. Chanakya \u2014 or a hundred ateliers like it \u2014 building a globally coveted house under its own name would be a transformation of Indian luxury.<\/p>\n

The distance between those two futures is not talent. India has demonstrated, on a Harrods pedestal this very month, that it holds the finest craft talent in the world. The distance is architecture \u2014 the brand-building, the meaning-ownership, the institution that the Shilp-Griha names and that India has, so far, declined to build for itself.<\/p>\n

A question, not a grievance<\/h3>\n

So I will end where the Monday note ended, because it is the honest question. India can be the most brilliant pair of hands in someone else’s house \u2014 visible, credited, admired, fairly paid \u2014 indefinitely. Forty years proves it can. That is not a bad life. It is simply not ownership, and it never becomes ownership, no matter how many beads or mirrors or hours are counted.<\/p>\n

The bag on the Harrods pedestal is a masterpiece. It is also a mirror. And the reflection it shows India is a question the next generation of builders will have to answer: how long do we make the world’s luxury before we decide to own it?<\/p>\n

The hands have always been ours. The name is the thing we have to build.<\/p>\n
