Why the world recognises the Kolhapuri but not its maker, and what it takes to build a house icon.<\/em><\/p>\n

What an icon does<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coco Chanel died in 1971. More than half a century later, the house that carries her name still rests on objects she created decades before that. Her little black dress appeared in American Vogue in 1926, which compared it to Ford\u2019s Model T because it was simple, repeatable and right for almost every woman. Her tweed suit arrived with her comeback collection in 1954. Her quilted bag, named the 2.55 after its creation in February 1955, is still the first thing most people picture when they hear the name Chanel.<\/p>\n

That is the work an icon does. It is a code that no longer needs its author. It can be recognised without a label, it survives the death of its creator, and it gives every later designer something to return to.<\/p>\n

Icons are built, not born<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most valuable handbag in the world was not created by the founder of its house.Herm\u00e8s began in 1837 as a maker of harnesses and saddles. The Birkin arrived in 1984, almost 150 years later, sketched by Jean-Louis Dumas, then head of Herm\u00e8s, after a conversation with Jane Birkin. Each Birkin is still made by a single artisan, over fifteen to twenty hours.<\/p>\n

Two lessons follow. The first is that icons are not an accident of founding genius. They are a capability that a house keeps alive across generations, so that it can produce a new one long after the founder has gone. The second is that the most coveted icon in luxury is, at its heart, a craft icon. Its value lies in the hours and the hand behind it. No country should understand that better than India.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s paradox: icons without houses<\/strong><\/p>\n

India is not short of icons. The Kolhapuri chappal, the Banarasi weave, the Kanjeevaram silk and Bidriware are recognised far beyond India\u2019s borders, and several carry Geographical Indication tags. But they belong to regions and communities rather than to houses. They are commons icons: shared, protected in principle, and owned by no single name.<\/p>\n

The consequence became visible in 2025. Kolhapuri-style sandals appeared on a Prada runway, and the world recognised the craft at once. After criticism, Prada did the right thing: in December 2025 it signed an agreement with LIDCOM and LIDKAR, the state bodies that support the artisans, to produce 2,000 pairs in India for sale at \u20b984,043 each. The artisans are now part of the story. The name on the box is still Prada.<\/p>\n

This is the same structural position I described in The Hands and the Name<\/em> <\/a>. India supplies the icon. Someone else supplies the house.<\/p>\n

The Icon Gap<\/strong><\/p>\n

The gap is not one of talent or of recognition. Indian designers are widely known for their styles, their palettes and their craft. What remains rare is a single object, made by an Indian house, that the world would recognise without its label.<\/p>\n

That is the Icon Gap. India has commons icons without houses. Europe built its houses on house icons. Closing the gap does not mean taking a commons icon and fencing it off. It means building house icons that grow out of the commons, and that carry the community\u2019s name inside them rather than erasing it.<\/p>\n

What an Indian house icon could look like<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the level of principle, a house icon built on India\u2019s own logic would pass three tests.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. It is recognisable without its label.<\/strong> The shape, the technique or the finish says the name before the tag does.<\/li>\n
  2. It outlives its designer.<\/strong> It belongs to the house, not to one season or one hand, and later designers return to it.<\/li>\n
  3. It carries a named lineage.<\/strong> This is where India can differ from Paris. The Shilp-Griha calls it Parampara<\/strong>: the named master craftspeople and communities who carry a technique forward. A European icon often hides its makers. An Indian house icon could make them part of what the customer is buying.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Birkin already points in this direction. Its value is the artisan\u2019s time. An Indian house icon could go further and make the lineage behind that time visible.<\/p>\n

    The question every founder should ask<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Icons are rarely planned as icons. They begin as a single strong decision, repeated with discipline for decades. Chanel repeated hers until they became law. Herm\u00e8s built a house patient enough to produce a new one 147 years after its founding.<\/p>\n

    So the question for every Indian founder is a simple one. What is your 2.55: the one object you would still be making, unchanged in its essence, in thirty years? Until a house can answer that, it has a collection.<\/p>\n

    Once it can, it has the beginning of an icon.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
